In many cases, the MES expert supports UMATI for the standardized connection of proprietary machine tools with the aim of continuous vertical communication.Augs/ Rimbach, 20.11.2019. SMEs are increasingly relying on the benefits of a continuous digitization in the company. Connections down to the machine level are required to create continuous communication. In many cases, this can only be done using interfaces that create a connection between existing proprietary systems and new modern tools. UMATI is one such standardized interface that can be implemented without much effort. “As MES experts, we know how important interoperability is on the way to Industry 4.0 is,” explains managing director Möller. “That's why we rely on proven interfaces, such as UMATI, which are standardized and easy to implement.”

UMATI stands for Universal Machine Tool Interface

UMATI (Universal Machine Tool Interface) is based on OPC UA, a well-known standard for implementing Industry 4.0. “In this way, process and machine data can be transferred via OPC in order to be able to visualize a wide variety of manufacturing processes as a result. Here, we also like to talk about transparency and, if necessary, tracking and tracing,” summarizes Möller.BiSoftMes In addition to the OPC and OPC UA interfaces, it also uses other communication protocols and modules. The aim is always to get an overview of current processes on the shop floor through the connection. “Data evaluation on the shop floor provides a basis for continuous optimization,” explains Möller. “Connectivity protocols such as UMATI are therefore crucial for productivity and are therefore an important building block for a smart factory.”

OPC standard for reading machine data

In medium-sized manufacturing companies, the OPC standard is often used to read machine data. However, IoT interfaces are also becoming increasingly important as part of digital transformation. Here too, gbo Datacomp is at the forefront. Michael Möller knows: “The future lies in a “world language” of interfaces. This is the next step towards Industry 4.0.”Caption: gbo datacomp uses UMATI for SMEs (Photo: shutterstock_561543469_suwin)
